Crop farming and food production

Planned support for seed access, demonstration plots, irrigation, crop diversification and post-harvest handling.

Farming for a food-secure future

This programme area focuses on smallholder crop production across Lower Shabelle. The updated SomFarms profile identifies the following planned activities.

Planned programme activities

  • Facilitate access to climate-adapted seeds for maize, sorghum, sesame and vegetables.
  • Establish demonstration plots for planting, spacing and soil management.
  • Support basic farm and community irrigation improvements with local coordination.
  • Promote post-harvest handling and storage to reduce crop loss.
  • Encourage crop diversification across staple, vegetable and cash crops.

Land, soil and water

Programme plans connect food production with soil health, water management and resilience to drought and flooding. Activities will depend on community priorities, access, resources and approved work plans.

Working with communities

Smallholder farmers, farmer groups, women, youth and vulnerable rural households are priority groups identified in the organisation profile.
